It's time for a new challenge at Stamps & Stencils and our hostess Rachel has chosen the theme Metallics. She says, "This month I would like you to make a piece involving metallics in some way - it could be metallic paints, rusted metal techniques, actual bits of metal, metal foil ....the possibilities are endless - also please use stamps and/or stencils. Have fun!"
Lately I can think of no better substrate than the Eileen Hull Sizzix Scoreboard Journal die. I decided to do a Finnabair inspired cover with metallic paints. I raided my box of chipboard and found these feathers I had cut and embossed for a project and never used. I thought they would make a fun dream catcher. The medallion is from Recollections and the Dream is either Recollections or Heidi Swap. I never save the packaging... I stenciled a black chipboard cover (thanks Bonnie!) and then glued my elements in place. I added some Art Stones, then went over the entire panel with black gesso.
This is such a fun and easy beginner mixed media experiment. Once everything is painted black, you only need to dry brush the metallic paints to create highlights.
I used Lumiere paints that I have had for about ten years. They are almost dried up, but that gave them a wax/paste like consistency that worked well for this project. I did blue, then wanted green but it was totally hardened. After blue, I added white, then bronze.
I left it like this for a day, then came back and added deeper color to the dream catcher for better contrast.
I wasn't happy with the Dream word and wanted even more contrast, so I gently tapped embossing ink onto the word and embossed with gold EP.
I finished my journal with black paper signatures and hope to use this as a gift. I think a white pigment pen or set of gelli roller pens would be great for using this as a Zen Doodle journal. My binding is a pamphlet stitch, described in THIS post. This time I let the tails of my threads hang outward so I could add some charms and a tassel. I hope you like it and are inspired to play along with our challenge at Stamps and Stencils!
