Finnabair Patina Paste Butterfly Tag for Tag Friday

Hi guys!  It's Tag Friday over at A Vintage Journey.  We have changed things up a bit this year and have added a linky party for our Tag Fridays.  We'd love to see the tags you're making this month, so come play along!  I made this tag just wanting to try something new.  I thought it was a hot mess, then came back hours later and finished it up and now I'm mostly pleased...

I thought loads of texture would work for this technique, so I started with a burlap tag I cut from scrap and then added some of the "ugly flowers" in my stash.  These are HL clearance items.  I gessoed everything and then added some hot glue "drips".  I did a bit of dry brushing of the rust colored paste.

I stapled a bundle of basket filler to my piece, then added Art Stones and more gesso.

I sprayed with my Prima Color Bloom spray, then added some Tim Holtz butterfly die cuts from chipboard.  My goal was to use the rusty color for a shadowy effect.

I painted a brass key with the bronze paint in the set.  And used it to highlight bits and pieces here and there.

I painted around the edges to sort of frame things.

I do like the texture of the burlap, but it is a bit busy.  Next time I would do a smoother background or some stenciling.  I added a sentiment by 7Dots.

The ribbon topper from DL Art.  I love this ribbon!  What do you think?  Do check out the inspiring tags by my team and play along.  We'd love to see what you're up to!

  6. Love the burlap contrasted with the flowers and filler, and because of that heavier texture, it can 'carry' the butterfly and key. What a fabulous tag Autumn

  7. I really love the burlap texture... I think it makes a great background for the dimensional collaging. Gorgeous rust peeking through the pretty teal greens and turquoise - and a great way to make use of the cheaper flowers in the stash! Fabulous tag.

  8. Autumn, I couldn't wait to get over here and see this tag in detail! I'm soooo happy you posted your steps, because my curiosity was killing me! What a gorgeous mixed media delight! I love the colors, and your arrangement is just perfect! Greater still, I'm happy you reminded me of those rust paints--light bulb just went on! And yes, that ribbon is stunning, and I happen to like the texture of the burlap backing. Sending big hugs!
