Free and Brave 4th of July Mixed Media Layout

page 1
I don't know what got into me, but I just had to make a scrapbook layout...  When I first started stamping years ago, it was flat and rigid, unlike my style.  Nowadays layouts are dynamic and just as cool as any other form of art.  My blog buddy, Cindy of Samsama Scrap, is being featured as a guest designer at Scrap Africa and after checking it out I was dying to play along!  What a great sketch!

As I sat down to work on my DT project for Stamps & Stencils (don't worry - I will get to it!), I ended up doodling out this entire design and thought to myself "if I don't do this now, I never will!"  Here you can see the two (Christmas) papers I used.  I used clear gesso to give them some tooth.  Then went on the stencil paste (stars - Tim Holtz and dots - Prima).  I sprayed and dripped with my DIY spray ink made from one dropper of Dr. PH Martin's liquid watercolor and water in a mini mister.  My favorite part was making "ribbon" from the baby wipe I blotted the ink with!  How fun!  Next I added some tissue tape to give some contrast.

page 3
I used some bead mix with Mod Podge for the shimmer of fireworks.

page 4
I used inky papers I made to create the tags.  The copper stars are my favorite detail.

page 5
Tim's chit chat stickers for the sentiment.  The wooden frame was painted with watered down Lumiere paints.

page 6
More detail of the baby wipe "ribbon" and the lace and string bundle.

page 7
Every inch of this page is busy busy!

page 8
It all started with this photo I found when digging for something for my next project.  I'm so glad I found it - and just in time for the 4th of July!  I hope to put this in a white frame and use it seasonally.  Have a wonderful forth of July and never forget our soldiers who fight for our freedom!  May God be glorified in America and this world.

  12. Love love LOVE this patriotic project, Autumn, and the vintage photo. It's so meaningful to think back about those who came before us, who contributed to our DNA, and our life styles... to those who were before them, 400 years ago, 1,000 years ago, 5,000 years ago, and even before then! How connected we become with them, and how blessed we are with artists such as yourself who remind us of that connectedness and the sacrifices that were made that we may enjoy life. hugs, de
