Tim Holtz December Daily Eileen Hull Journal

Friends, it's time for a new challenge at A Vintage Journey and our hostess Sandy has chosen the theme Paper Stash.  She says, "I am sure we all have them, those endless bits of beautiful scrapbook papers we have hoarded over the years. Create a project of any kind using them in creative ways in our preferred vintage, shabby, mixed media, art journaling, industrial, timeworn or steampunk styles."  I have lots of leftover papers from the Tim Holtz seasonal Paper Stash pads from the last several years and decided to whittle away at the pile, while making a December Daily journal using the Eileen Hull Travelers Journal die. I cut my journal boards from black chipboard and used a glue stick to adhere the pieced papers.

I didn't do much mixed media in this journal, because the purpose of December Daily is simplicity and daily journaling.  For today's post I'm just sharing the cover, but I hope to work in my journal throughout December and will share those pages down the road.  I sanded and dipped a Baseboard Frame in Frayed Burlap to grunge it up a little more.  I added one of Tim's new Christmas Adornments with string.  The ephemera is from the Christmas Snippets pack.  The black sentiment is from some the Paper Stash.

I found a pack of Tim's Trimmings at Tuesday Morning and wrapped a strip around my cover.  I sanded one of the new Christmas Quote Chips and layered with more of the Christmas Snippets Ephemera, adding an eyelet and twine to the "25". 

I attached the Christmas star from the Adornments pack to the center of my black and white twine, then tied two red jingle bells to each end, then looped it through the elastic insert covers to add some interest to the spine.

How fun to hear this jingle ever time I journal in December!  :)  I hope you've enjoyed this simple paper project and are inspired to pull out your Paper Stash for our current challenge!

Tim Holtz Skeleton Leaves Mixed Media Card Tutorial

Tim Holtz 3D Embossing Steampunk Masculine Tag

Hi friends!  Today is a 5th Friday and we celebrate at A Vintage Journey with Tag Friday.  Hop on over and see what my uber talented teamies have created for your inspiration. We would love for you to share a tag you've been working on this month. 

I had a play with my friend @carolinasweetlee's new Tim Holtz 3D Embossing Folders and we made a number of backgrounds with different techniques.  I adhered two portions of my backgrounds made with the Foundry and Mechanics folders to a chipboard tag.  These were both done by simply sponging Distress Inks onto the panels.  I added various strips of Tim's tissue tape and sanded it with a nail file to remove the sheen.

I embossed a Gadget Gears 2 die with Seth Apter Chunky Rust Baked Texture and tucked it beneath my collage.

I used one of Tim's Fluted Fasteners as my tag topper.

My collage elements are all from an older pack of Tim's Snippets Ephemera.  The sentiment is from the Clippings sticker set. 

I dyed my sisal fibers with Black Soot.  The Paper Doll image was sanded lightly and sponged with Vintage Photo DI.  I hope you'll hop on over to A Vintage Journey for more tag inspiration and make sure to share a tag in our link up.

Rusty Mixed Media Floral Canvas with Lindy's

I'm honored to hostess this month's challenge at A Vintage Journey where our theme is Rusty and Crusty.  "Many of us love rust and enjoy looking for new ways to get that authentic look of crusty peeling metal. For this challenge include some rust in your vintage, shabby, mixed media, art journaling, industrial, timeworn or steampunk project, whether it be the real thing, a faux technique or just a rust colour on your project."

I truly cannot remember what I was making this canvas for, but some time ago started this rusty panel in hopes of making a very "Seth Apter" style of project with some of his die cuts and stamps.  I started with a burlap 8x8 canvas and painted it with Viva Rusty Paper, then added Prima rust paste here and there.  I watered down Iced Spruce Distress Oxide and added it to give some chalkiness and darkness here and there.  Next I embossed Seth's Dot Matrix stamp in an old Cloisonne embossing powder (which had a greenish hint).  I added some flecks of watered down Vintage Photo DOX.  To me it was a dark abyss!  So there it sat for several months.  Then I had the idea to create a canvas with a ripple and flowers emerging, so I went back to work...

I'm sorry I forgot to do a process photo here, but basically across the middle I Mod Podged a piece of tissue paper, which I had scrunched up into a 1" band, across the middle of the canvas.  I dried it with a hair dryer on cool and added DecoArt crackle paste above and below the tissue.  Then I added watery gesso above and below the crackle and spritzed it with water at the edges so it would sort of dissolve outward and not leave a stark line. 

I used my heat gun when the crackle was mostly dried to dry the gesso wash.  The coolest thing happened, the embossed Dot Matrix embossing powder sort of rose through the gesso as it heated!  It gave so much gorgeous variation to the mass of white.  I brushed on the dark brown Prima rust paste along the tissue and hated it.  I trued my best to wipe it off and some of it settled in the cracks, which was a good effect.  Then I sprayed it with Lindy's Cocoa Bean Copper heavily along the tissue.  Oh my gosh!!!  What a gorgeous spray!  I followed with Tears on my Pillow Tangerine and Sandra Dee Sepia over the crackle and gessoed portions, spraying until the color was sufficiently random.  :)

I chose three rusty toned Prima flowers to emerge from this "crack" and glued them over a bed of basket filler atop an embossed doily die and filigree metal charms from The Funkie Junkie Boutique. 

For the doily, I first sprayed it with the Cocoa Bean Copper spray completely, then embossed in Burnt Copper Leaves and then again in Seth's new Chunky Rust Baked Texture.  Oh my gosh, I could have eaten this doily up like rusty candy!!!  Ha!

I added some "water drops" below  my flowers.

Then spent a while rummaging through an old hymnal for this beautiful snippet, which was the most favorite song in all the world of my dear late friend Florence.  Oh how special this is to me!  And very fitting for these emerging flowers...

Tim Holtz Wallpaper Paper Doll Tag

I'm thrilled to announce a fun new twist on Tag Friday at A Vintage Journey!  With the changes we've brought in for the new birthday year we thought you might like to join in and share what tags you have been making. There isn't a prize and we're not promising any comments but the host of the month will choose one of those submitted as a Pinworthy and it will be pinned on our Pinterest Board and showcased in next month's Winner's post. To enter link one or as many tags as you want that have been made and blogged in this month (ie the 1st to the 31st March). The linky will close midnight on the 6th April which is when the new challenge begins so you have one week to get your entries in but remember they can come from any March 2018 blog date.

After my first attempt of dying Tim Holtz's new Worn Wallpaper HERE I was tempted again to try staining a variety of the papers.  I picked up some scraps and gave them all a bath in Frayed Burlap DI and Iced Spruce DOX.

I glued them to my tag in a patchwork and added strips of washi tape here and there for additional pattern.

I pulled a favorite pair of Paper Dolls and some other TH ephemera together.

The flowers are handmade.  I cut the yellow one in half.

I used a Distress Crayon around the edge of the tag to brighten it up.  I love the texture of this Worn Wallpaper!  The sentiment seemed to be perfect for spring and a simple girl trying to stay happy in a world filled with much sorrow.  Let these words of our Lord spoken to Peter during the last supper comfort us:

"but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail"

Darkroom Door House Stamps Journal Pages
